How to import your WhatsApp chats in 60 seconds

Practical import tutorial. How to export the chat from your phone, what format Memchats needs, what happens with attachments and how memory is processed.

Step 1: Export the chat

Open WhatsApp on your phone, enter the conversation you want to import. Tap the contact name at the top, scroll down to "Export chat". It will ask whether to include media. Pick "Without media" for a first test (faster and enough for Memchats to understand context). It generates a .txt or .zip.

Step 2: Upload to Memchats

In the app, tap the "+" top right. Pick "Import WhatsApp". Drop the file. Memchats auto-detects: primary contact, message count, date range. You confirm and processing begins.

Step 3: Wait 30 to 90 seconds

During that time, Memchats: parses the .txt line by line, groups by turns, computes embeddings with self-hosted bge-m3 (never leaves Germany), builds the contact's living profile, detects commitments, contradictions, patterns. For chats up to 5,000 messages, it usually takes under 60 seconds.

What to do next

Once processed, open the conversation in Memchats. You'll see the contact profile, timeline, open commitments. You can ask an advisor "what did we agree on X" and get an exact citation. To keep updating, export periodically: Memchats deduplicates automatically.
