Assistant or prompter: the difference that matters
Memchats isn't an assistant. It's a prompter. That is: you speak, you decide, you send; the AI's role is to whisper what's worth remembering. The distinction matters.
Assistant: does it for you
An assistant takes a task and executes it. "Book a table for two". "Summarize this document". "Send an email saying X". The user delegates and the AI acts. Works well for operational tasks with closed criteria.
Prompter: helps you do it
A prompter (in the theater sense) doesn't execute: it gives you the context you need at the exact moment. When you're about to respond to your sister in a hard moment, you don't want the AI to write for you. You want it to remind you: "heads up, 5 days ago you told her X and that fits what she's asking now". You write the response. You pick the tone. You send.
Why the distinction matters
Human relationships aren't tasks with closed criteria. You don't want an LLM drafting your reply to a custody negotiation with your ex. You want to keep your voice, your authority, your judgment over the case. But you also don't want to lose sight of contradictions, commitments, patterns.
The prompter respects the user's authorship. The assistant replaces it. For human relational tasks, the first philosophy is the correct one.
What Memchats does by default
Memchats does suggest messages. But the suggestion always comes preceded by concrete citations: "on 03/14 they said Y". You read the citation, decide whether the suggestion fits, and if you send it, you press send yourself. The AI never sends on its own. That's the line.
